30 football fans in Istanbul have been accused of plotting to overthrow the Turkish state. If found guilty, they could face life sentences.

Last year, Turkish police roughed-up environmental activists who tried to stop construction at sites in Gezi Park and Taksim Square, one of the few green spaces left in the heart of Istanbul. Fans of the city’s club Besiktas took part in demonstrations, and because one of the protest marches passed by the Prime Minister's office, it was considered an attempted coup d'état. The fans are among many former protestors who are now being pursued and punished by Turkish authorities.
