The coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom marks the end of a contentious succession dispute that divided the royal family. While traditional kings hold no political power in Uganda, they remain influential cultural figures and symbols of identity.
Nyabongo succeeds King Oyo, who died of cancer after more than three decades on the throne. Facing a young population and lingering family divisions, the new monarch has pledged to unite the kingdom and strengthen its cultural heritage.
