The level of medical care and sanitary conditions in Ukraine's prisons is said to be unfit for human habitation. Illnesses such as tuberculosis, hepatitis and AIDS are rife. Today, at least half of Yulia Tymoshenko's cabinet are incarcerated in one of these prisons. But many trade union members and human rights activists are also behind bars. Eduard Bagirov is a human rights activist in Kiev. He believes boycotting the European Championships is not the answer. In fact he says it is only interaction with people from abroad that will help persuade the Ukrainians to do more to respect human rights.
