The main contractor working on the construction of the Lviv stadium for the 2012 European Football Championship will be discharged due to slow work.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Boris Kolesnikov made the televised announcement on Tuesday. He said an international consortium of Ukrainian, Turkish, Croatian and Macedonian companies will build the stadium instead.
The announcement comes after UEFA president Michel Platini criticized the site delays on Monday, saying that construction in Lviv "has made no progress whatsoever."
Delays in Kiev
Work on Ukraine's other venues has also fallen behind. The renovation of the Olympic stadium in the capital Kiev is three months behind schedule, but the construction company working on the project has promised to catch up on its timetable by June.
Platini told journalists in Brussels that Ukraine could lose the right to co-host the 2012 tournament with Poland if it fails to complete its venues on time.
"No Kiev, no Ukraine. No capital, no country," he said on Monday.
