Russia's invasion of Ukraine 3 years on

February 24, 2025

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022 kicked off the largest and deadliest European conflict since World War II. As the US under Donald Trump warms up to the Kremlin, support for Ukraine has begun to falter.

Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, escalating a conflict that began with Russia's illegal annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. The conflict has caused hundreds of thousands of military casualties, and also killed tens of thousands of Ukrainians.

Three years later, the united front Europe once showed in solidarity with Ukraine has begun to falter. The United States, under newly elected President Donald Trump, has also started to reengage with Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin, with Trump publicly attacking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

DW explains the human and environmental toll of Russia's war in Ukraine, and what the future holds for the conflict.
