Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been speaking to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He praised Donald Trump after the US President unexpectedly reversed his position on Ukraine's prospect in the war against Russia. DW asked people in Kyiv what they think about it.

As Volodymyr Zelenskyy rallied support at the UN, Russian drones once again ignited fires across Ukraine. Speaking in New York, the Ukrainian president stressed that international law is ineffective without strong allies, stating: "There are no security guarantees, except friends and weapons.

After successful talks with US President Donald Trump, Zelenskyy welcomed continued American backing — including Trump's latest statement that Ukraine could defeat Russia and reclaim the territory lost since the full-scale invasion in 2022.

When asked by DW, Kyiv residents voiced skepticism about Trump's reliability. Still, many agreed: without US aid, regaining occupied land remains out of reach.
