Juana Hernández keeps Mexico City moving. A street cleaner by day, she turns every shift into training for a 100km ultramarathon, proving resilience, grit and self-belief can overcome any obstacle.

Juana Hernández has spent 21 years keeping the streets of Mexico City clean. Every morning, the street cleaner begins work at 6 a.m., pushing a handcart through Iztapalapa, the city borough that generates the most waste. She collects and sorts trash from homes and businesses, earning less than $560 a month and often relying on tips and recyclable materials to supplement her income.

But the kilometers Juana covers at work have become part of a very different journey. After battling a severe depression, she discovered running and began with short distances, eventually working her way up to ultramarathons. Now, she is taking on one of her biggest challenges yet: a 100-kilometer mountain race. Through heat, mud, rain, darkness and exhaustion, Juana pushes herself to the limit — drawing on the resilience she has built through years of work and running.
