UN: Iran war raises 'serious environmental concerns'

The war in the Middle East is proving devastating for the environment: Attacks on oil infrastructure have sent toxic particles flying into the air. Strikes on ships have caused oil spills that threaten marine life.

US and Israeli strikes on Iran have hit around 30 oil sites, while Iran has targeted energy facilities across several Gulf states. The UN warns the attacks risk severe environmental damage, from air and water contamination to major oil spills. Recent tanker fires and the sinking of a frigate highlight growing threats to marine life, ecosystems and public health, as reliable data remains scarce.
