Each week at least two children die from abuse and neglect in Germany, a UNICEF study revealed on Thursday. A total of 523 boys and girls died violent deaths in the country over the past five years, 148 of whom were less than one year old, the U.N. children's agency announced in Berlin. Germany is in the middle range of the statistic, while the United States, where 27 children are killed by violence each week, led the list of OECD countries examined in the study. In the industrialized countries around 3,500 children die each year as a result of maltreatment. In the run-up to World Children's Day, on Saturday, UNICEF said cases of death were "only the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to daily violence against children.
