Union Parties Enjoying Strong Voter Support

September 30, 2003

After the landslide victory for the Christian Social Union (CSU) in regional elections in Bavaria, the Union parties (CSU and Christian Democratic Union) are more popular than ever with German voters. A survey conducted by the Forsa polling organization found that every second voter (50 percent) would vote for the CSU or CDU if federal elections were held now. The conservative Union parties added three percentage points to their approval ratings since last week, while the Social Democrats (SPD) lost two points. The slide in popularity of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's SPD continues unabated. The survey found only 26 percent of those surveyed would vote for the party, the worst showing for the SPD this year. The Agenda 2010 structural reform plan championed by Schröder in addition to in-fighting within the party have served to alienate many voters. A clear majority, 68 percent, do not believe the party can enact its reforms by the end of the 2006 legislative period.
