Kitchenware, appliances, production waste ... the scrap metal is piled high at the ELG company in Duisburg. But what looks like rubbish is more prized than ever as a commodity: stainless steel.

Demand is currently higher than the combined production of all the mines in the world. Scrapyards are becoming tomorrow's commodities sources. MADE IN GERMANY visits the "above-ground mine".
