US military buildup off Venezuela heightens tensions

The US military continues to bolster its presence off the coast of its Latin American neighbor. Analysts say Washington's goal remains regime change, not drug cartels.

The US military is ramping up its presence near Venezuela, as tensions rise in the Caribbean. President Nicolas Maduro has warned of a possible invasion and is reportedly seeking support from Russia, though Moscow has denied plans for military aid.

Experts note that unlike in 2019, when Russian forces deterred US action, today Venezuela stands largely alone as ties with Russia have weakened. Analysts say Washington's goal remains regime change, not drug cartels.
