US military threat fuels fear and uncertainty in Venezuela

US President Donald Trump has said the airspace above Venezuela is to be closed. With a US task force already in the Caribbean, land operations against suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers could soon begin.

The US Navy has deployed 15 warships, including its largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, near Venezuela as tensions rise in the Caribbean. Around 15,000 US troops are stationed in the region, fueling fears in Caracas of possible military action. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro insists on dialogue with US President Donald Trump, saying "there is no alternative to peace," but warns his country is ready to defend itself as uncertainty grips citizens.
