US seizes oil tanker near Venezuela

US forces seized an oil tanker near Venezuela amid rising tensions with Venezuelan authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro. Washington recently boosted its Caribbean military presence, officially to curb drug smuggling.

The US military and Coast Guard seized a large oil tanker off Venezuela's coast, which it said was carrying sanctioned oil. The United States has recently increased its military presence in the Caribbean, targeting alleged drug-trafficking boats. It has so far destroyed over 20 vessels and killed 87 people. Venezuelan authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro condemned US actions as interventionism and regime-change plans, while Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado faced harsh criticism from Maduro.
