German police have detained two American soldiers in connection with a fire that destroyed the town hall in Baumholder, in the western state of Rheinland-Palatinate, US military spokesman Major Michael J. Indovina said on Friday. The names and ranks of the soldiers, both assigned to the 1st Armored Division in Wiesbaden, were not released. They are suspected of involvement "in breaking and entering and simple arson in connection with the fire," the spokesman said. Neither of the soldiers has been charged or formally arrested. German police are still investigating the incident and are being assisted by US Army criminal investigators.
