South Seas: Nuclear waste in a South Seas paradise

In the 1950s, the US carried out nuclear weapons tests on the Enewetak Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands. The resulting radioactive waste is still stored under the concrete “Runit Dome”.  Now that’s at risk from heat and rising sea levels.

Ukraine: Its war-ravaged forests

Russia's war in Ukraine has destroyed entire forests and fires remain common. Clearing the region of munitions and mines also exposes people and nature to great harm. Reforestation and recovery will take decades.
