A young marine conservationist is using social media to engage the public in her seabird protection and rescue work. Penguins are among the beneficiaries.

Saving South Africa's Penguins—One Post at a Time

African penguins are critically endangered, but a young marine conservationist in Cape Town is using social media to fight for their survival. Martine Viljoen and her team at the Two Oceans Aquarium rescue seals, sunfish and seabirds entangled in plastic waste, and rehabilitate them where necessary.

Through Instagram, she raises awareness about the threats facing marine wildlife — like food scarcity, climate change and plastic pollution — and inspires others to get involved. Her creative initiative, WaddleOn, even funds penguin conservation through locally made socks. It's a powerful example of how digital outreach can drive real-world impact.
