Young singers need more than a good voice

For young would-be singers here in Germany globalisation isn't the only challenge. Cash-strapped national and municipal authorities are simply no longer able to pay for all the choirs and ensembles that have been such a feature of Germany's classical music scene. So, there are fewer jobs to go round. Another problem: singers these days aren't expected to just sing. They need an authentic stage presence - and they must be business savvy - as we hear now from these students at Berlin's University of the Arts.
