Women abused by their husbands, sons or relatives are often over 60 years old. Often, they have been abused their entire lives. In 2024, 80% more cases of domestic violence were reported in Greece than in 2023.

It took Anastasia Tsalkitzoglou decades to find the courage to speak out, decades in which she experienced humiliation and domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. Like her, more and more Greek women are breaking their silence, deciding to talk about their mistreatment by family members. Police report a surge in cases, especially among women aged 60 and older. Although lawmakers have passed tougher laws, many in Thessaloniki are still hesitant to share their stories.
