The Indian-controlled region of Ladakh is reeling after the deadliest civil unrest in decades. At least five people were killed when security forces opened fire on statehood protesters. The region was separated from Indian-administered Kashmir in 2019.

Protests in Ladakh for greater autonomy turned violent, leaving five dead and over 100 injured. Demonstrators accuse police of firing on peaceful crowds. Government buildings and vehicles were torched, including the BJP office. A curfew has been now enforced. Local leaders condemn the use of force, citing legal violations. Talks with Indian officials continue, with the next meeting set for October, as Ladakh’s youth push for change amid growing unrest.
