Volkswagen, Europe's biggest car maker, is seeking to boost US sales of its top-of-the-range Phaeton car by offering dealers there a bonus of $10,000 (€7,800) for every car they sell, a spokesman for the group's US operations revealed on Wednesday. "With this program, we hope to make room for our new models" in the US, Volkswagen of America spokesman Steve Keyes told the business daily Handelsblatt. VW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder had originally hoped to sell 2,500 to 3,000 Phaetons in the United States each year. But by the end of September, only 1,100 of the cars, which have a list price of $68,000 to $100,000 in the US, had been sold there and full-year sales were unlikely to exceed 2,000.
