VW and MOIA are testing autonomous ridepooling in Hamburg using ID. Buzz AD vans. The system promises fast, shared urban mobility — but raises questions over safety, regulation, and control of future transport networks.

Autonomous driving is moving closer to reality as Volkswagen and MOIA test fully driverless ridepooling in Hamburg. The VW ID. Buzz AD is already navigating real city traffic using cameras, radar, lidar and cloud-based systems to pick up and transport passengers via app-based ride sharing. The system promises quicker, shared urban mobility with short walks to pickup points and low waiting times. Supporters see smoother public transport and less congestion, while critics warn about safety, liability, and the risk of future mobility becoming subscription-based. With testing expanding beyond Europe to cities like Beijing, San Francisco and Phoenix, VW is positioning itself not just as a carmaker, but as a provider of full autonomous transport systems for cities worldwide.
