FOOTBALL

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer won the price for his lifetime achievement. The 61-year-old Bayern Munich president, who won the World Cup with Germany both as a player in 1974 and as coach in 1990, will be presented on monday with the award for his glorious footballing career and for helping to organise the 2006 World Cup. The prize is a "special honour for prominent sportsmen and personalities who have substantially made their mark on international sport.

FOOTBALL

Doctors treating Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona say his condition has improved. Maradona was admitted to hospital on Wednesday and is undergoing detoxification treatment. Fans posted messages of support outside the hospital where Maradona is staying.

TENNIS

Guillermo Canas of Argentina is through to the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. He defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 7-5 and 6-2 in the semis. Canas will now face Novak Djokovic of Serbia who demolished opponent Andy Murray in the other semi.

RUNNING

There was tragic news from the Marathon des Sables in Marocco, when it was announced, that 49-year-old French runner Bernard Jule died of a cardiac arrest while competing. He was found dead in his tent on Thursday morning in the south east of the country. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital where a post mortem confirmed the cause of death. The Marathon des Sables is considered to be the toughest foot race in the world, covering a distance equivalent to six marathons over six days through the southern Moroccan desert
