Article based on news reports (sms)August 5, 2007

A last-minute goal put Werder Bremen past Eintracht Braunschweig in the first round of the German Cup. Stuttgart needed extra time to win their game while second division St. Pauli beat Leverkusen.

Last season's beaten finalists and current Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart also struggled against lower league opposition, beating SV Wehen Wiesbaden 2-1 after extra-time.

Roberto Hilbert scored twice from the penalty spot for Stuttgart, who finished with nine men after Gledson and Fernando Meira both saw red cards.

Fellow Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen were less fortunate, crashing out 1-0 away to second division St Pauli.

Fabian Boll scored the winner three minutes from time for Hamburg club St Pauli, who managed to make it to the last four in the 2005/2006 season.

"That was the sign that good preparations don't mean much," Leverkusen coach Michael Skibbes said.

UEFA Cup participants Leverkusen were without new signing Arturo Vidal due to lack of match fitness while Paul Freier, Lukas Sinkiewicz, Sergej Barbarez and Carsten Ramelow were also absent.

First division side Energie Cottbus also fell at the first hurdle, going out on penalties to third division team Rot-Weiss Essen after the sides were level at 2-2 at the end of extra time.

Other Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin and Hanover 96 all safely managed to book their places in the next round with victories over third division opposition.

New signing Diego Klimowicz netted twice as Dortmund had a 4-1 win over Magdeburg, Berlin under new coach Lucien Favre beat Unterhaching 3-0 while Hanover overcame Rot-Weiss Ahlen 3-1.

"Naturally we could have played better in the second half," Hanover coach dieter Hecking said. "But the only thing that counts today is scratching it from the list and moving forward."

On Friday, second division club Hoffenheim advanced to the second round with a 4-2 victory in extra time against Augsburg.

The remaining first round matches will be played Sunday and Monday.
