In 2025, 28,000 microearthquakes triggered fears of a volcanic eruption on the Greek island. Scientists now believe they have identified the cause. An early warning system should help to better identify threats.

Researchers on the vessel Meteor are exploring seismic unrest near Santorini, Greece, using deep‑sea cameras and new underwater sensors to detect volcanic activity.
