Leaders from Nordic and Baltic countries, along with representatives from some of the European Union's largest member states, are gathering in Finland for the European Arctic Summit.

Finland hopes to use the two-day meeting in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, to highlight the Arctic region's economic potential and growing security challenges.

The summit comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in bringing Greenland under American control, while concerns are also mounting over Russia's increasingly assertive posture toward Europe.

Leaders attending the summit are expected to call for the European Union to take a more proactive role in the Arctic and to commit sufficient resources to support the region's long-term development and security.
