Africa is seeing a surge in Gen Z protests. What's causing the uprising among the generation of digital natives in Madagascar?

Malagasy youth demand just one thing: a change in leadership. Complaints over daily power and water cuts on social media in August 2025 quickly snowballed into street protests over government corruption. The uprising led to the sacking of the energy minister, the dissolution of the entire government and the appointment of a new prime minister. The calls of the "Gen Z Madagascar" coalition of students and youth, which is fronting the unrest,  for the resignation of President Andry Rajoelina are growing louder.

Some Gen Z protesters in the Indian Ocean nation say they feel inspired by Morocco, which has seen a similar youth-led push for reforms. Africa's Gen Z generation of digital natives have become incredibly vocal in recent years.  There were #EndSARS protests in Nigeria 2020, #FixTheCountry protests in Ghana in 2022 and #RejectFinanceBill protests in Kenya the following year.
