What’s the best way to get rid of dandruff?
May 8, 2015Dr. Lekutat's answer:
The skin cells on your scalp are replaced about every four weeks. In the case of dandruff, the process is faster, and the cells can clump into flakes. People who suffer from dry skin are more likely to have dandruff. Washing hair frequently with water that’s too hot, blow-drying, and hair or scalp tinctures that contain alcohol can also dry out the skin on scalp and exacerbate dandruff. In that case, one option is applying moisturizing lotions or a few drops of sunflower seed oil, and leaving it on overnight. Sometimes, though, people with oily scalps also suffer from dandruff. In such cases, hormones often play a role. This form of dandruff is common during puberty, for example. In this case, special anti-dandruff shampoos can help. But if dandruff persists, it’s a good idea to pay a visit to your dermatologist to check for other possible causes, including allergies, an infection, or atopic dermatitis.
