When bears stop sleeping: A climate story from Ladakh

In India’s remote Ladakh region, climate change is bringing Himalayan brown bears closer to villages. Shorter winters mean bears wake earlier from hibernation, leading to more attacks on livestock and growing risks for farmers. In response, WWF and local communities have launched conservation efforts, including stronger animal shelters, waste management, and night patrols known as the “Bear Brothers.” These measures help reduce conflict, protect livelihoods, and support coexistence — while preserving one of the world’s oldest and rarest bear species.
