Whose Fault is the Wet Asphalt?
September 15, 2005
Dozens of motorists on a German autobahn got stuck in traffic Thursday -- literally.
Recent rain had loosened up the newly-laid asphalt on the A20 autobahn in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania to such a degree that cars got stuck in the sludge. Those that made it could nonetheless face thousands of euros in car damage, said a police spokesman.
"People are livid," the spokesman told Spiegel Online.
The police station has so far received more than 200 calls from people complaining about car damage. Experts say that the thick, sticky sludge is difficult -- almost impossible -- to remove from brakes and other engine parts. Police have advised all motorists who drove on the autobahn to take their cars to local repair shops to check for potentially dangerous damage.
The blame game has already begun, with state traffic authorities shifting responsibility to the construction company, Strabag. The company, on the other hand, denies any wrongdoing by their workers.
Let the lawsuits begin.
