In 2014, Mario Götze and André Schürrle became heroes. The two combined for the goal that gave Germany the World Cup title. But rather than spurring them on to new heights, that moment was the start of a decline that saw Götze depart the Bundesliga at 28, and Schürrle retire altogether at 29.
