Germany’s Transrapid was once seen as the future of transportation. The magnetic levitation train floated above its track, reached speeds of up to 450 km/h and inspired ambitious plans to connect major German cities. Yet despite decades of development and proven technology, the project never achieved widespread adoption. In this video, REV revisits the abandoned test track in northern Germany to explore how one of the country’s most celebrated engineering achievements became a relic, examining the roles of rising costs, competing rail technologies and a fatal 2006 accident. Also in this episode, REV tests the new BMW M5 Touring, a 727-horsepower plug-in hybrid performance wagon, assessing its speed, hybrid drivetrain, practicality and everyday usability.
