Why it's so hard to ban plastics

Plastic bans are failing to deliver: Loopholes, weak enforcement and policy inconsistencies undermine global efforts.

Despite EU bans on single-use plastics, many of those items still flood German streets and shops — often illegally imported or sold under legal loopholes. Enforcement is weak, and confusion reigns among consumers and businesses. In contrast, Kenya's strict ban has cleaned up cities, but cross-border smuggling persists. Experts say global coordination and production caps are key to real progress.
