Why the UAE is quitting OPEC now

The United Arab Emirates exits OPEC, causing further insecurity in global oil markets already strained by the war in Iran. Reflecting rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf, the move also reflects internal divisions within the organization.

The United Arab Emirates has announced it will leave OPEC, The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries that includes Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait — and Iran. It also plans to exit OPEC+, the broader alliance that counts Russia among its members.

David Levitz speaks to Justin Dargin, senior fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, a Qatar-based think tank, about the political tensions and rivalries behind the move and the possible fallout for global oil markets
