Thousands of dams are being destroyed, bringing life back to its rivers. Migratory fish are returning to waterways, habitats are reconnecting, and entire ecosystems are being restored.

Across Europe, hundreds of obsolete dams are being removed to restore rivers and ecosystems. This video follows the dismantling of Spain’s Enobieta Dam, abandoned decades ago after technical problems made it obsolete. Researchers found that draining its reservoir allowed forests, streams and wildlife to return within just a few years. The report explores how dams support hydropower, drinking water and flood protection, but also fragment rivers, block fish migration and disrupt habitats. It examines Europe’s growing dam removal movement while highlighting the continued need for new dams in regions facing rising energy and water demands.
