Wiesberger claims French Open
July 5, 2015
Bernd Wiesberger became the first Austrian to win the Open de France title on Sunday and secure the third European crown of his career.
Austria's best golfer had four birdies in a row on his way to a five-under first half, which put him in the driver's seat. Overnight leader Jaco Van Zyl of South Africa was unable to match Wiesberger's perfromance and soon dropped off the pace.
For most of the fourth round, the Austrian's main challenger was Germany's Martin Kaymer, who birdied two of the first three holes. But putts that shaved the hole by millimeters on the ninth and 14th holes stalled his momentum.
And an approach shot that found the water on the 18th dropped Kaymer to fourth, behind England's James Morrison, who finished up in second, and Van Zyl.
Meanwhile, 29-year-old Wiesberger went round the back nine with eight pars and a concluding bogey to finish on 13-under overall. It's the biggest victory in the Vienna-born golfer's career.
