US President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff has said Iran may hold talks with Washington "this week" to end the war. Speaking with DW, former US negotiator Aaron David Miller sharply challenged that optimism.

As the Trump administration suggests the US-Israel war with Iran could be resolved "within weeks," foreign‑policy experts warn that both the diplomatic conditions and military realities make a quick end highly unlikely.

In a DW interview, former US Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller, now a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, dismissed such expectations. "The chances are slim to none," he said. He stressed that the conflict has become an international crisis that cannot be resolved through quick shuttle diplomacy or improvised back‑channel communications.

Miller argued that both sides lack a "shared sense of urgency," which he sees as essential for meaningful negotiations. Iran, he said, believes it is "winning," absorbing pain while imposing economic and security costs on Gulf states and Western interests.
