Women push for political power and equality in new Syria

A year after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, women only hold a few seats in the newly elected parliament. Activists decry this imbalance as male dominance over the country's political life, and have vowed to fight for change.

One year after the fall of Bashar Assad, Syrian women are fighting for political participation amid growing gender inequality. Dentist Angela Khoury ran in the country's first parliamentary elections but lost — only six of 119 seats went to women.

Activists like Muzna Dureid warn of hostility toward female participation and rising violence, urging women in Syria to build alliances and promote feminist visions.
