July 23, 2013

A camera attached to a cell phone mast in the middle of a forest, rotating automatically and capturing over 100 images every six seconds. It monitors changes in movement, brightness and structures to detect smoke, and registers the first indications of a forest fire.

The German-made surveillance system was designed to reduce the time needed to extinguish major fires, and has proved a major export success.

Report by Holger Trzeczak.
