The possibility of Catalan independence has angered the rest of Spain. Pro-independence activists say that the region shouldered too great a burden during Spain's debt crisis: Catalans paid for Spanish incompetence. Others warn that breaking away from the country now could leave Spain vulnerable while it is still on the road to recovery.
