City Portrait

The town of Zons between Cologne and Düsseldorf is a medieval oasis far from the bustle of the big city.

Strolling through the streets in downtown Zons always feels like a little trip in a time machine. The first mention of the western German village was recorded in the sixth century, though it didn't officially become a town until 1373.

Nowadays, it's Zons' unique medieval flair that attracts visitors.

Gates and towers

The best way to enter the inner city is through the Rheintor (Rhine gate) on the eastern side of the town. With the customs house towering to the left and the Mary of the Angels Chapel to the right, guardian angels peer down on arriving visitors from the gate above. Both the chapel and the angel were designed by a Franciscan monk.

Paved with rough cobblestones, the street beyond the gate leads to one of the oldest homes in the inner city, built right after the last big fire in 1620. That blaze was just one of many destructive events the town has faced over the centuries. There have been three big fires (in 1464, 1547 and 1620) and several plague epidemics. The town has been flooded by the Rhine River, heavily bombarded during the Thirty Years War and was part of France for a time.

Despite the hardship, Zons has emerged remarkably intact. A diverse collection of towers still graces the city wall which encloses the old section of town. There are round towers, square ones, small ones, and tall ones. For a small fee, visitors can take a look inside the windmill tower and turn its sails themselves.

Fun and relaxing

In summer, there's likely to be a show or concert to watch at the open-air theater. At other times of year, special events like Renaissance fairs, carnivals and traditional "shooting festivals" also take place. Winter visitors can stroll through the Christmas market.

Those interested in sitting back and doing a little people watching won't have a problem finding a nice street cafe to enjoy an ice cream or cappuccino.

Seen everything Zons has to offer? Then hop in the car or train to explore the surroundings. How about a walk along the Rhine River or a trip to the Zonser Heide? This park has a big playground and is a perfect place for kids -- and dogs.
