Police in the southern Indian city of Bangalore on 16 August denied rumours of attacks on migrants from the north-east after thousands of students from that region fled the city. At least 5,000 people, mostly students, left on special trains late 15 August in response to rumours spread by telephone text messages of imminent targeted attacks, the IANS news agency reported. The purported upcoming attacks would be in revenge for recent ethnic violence in the north-eastern state of Assam that killed 74 people, mostly Muslim settlers, IANS reported.
