日本與印度簽署了一份有關共同生產稀土的諒解備忘錄,以減少對中國的依賴。迄今中國控制著全球絕大部份的稀土出口。根據周五簽署的備忘錄,日本和印度政府將支持日本豐田貿易公司與印度一家國營公司聯合開采稀土項目。據日本時事通訊社報導,預計從明年春天開始,日本將每年從印度進口4.100噸的稀土,佔日本稀土需求量的10%以上。稀土被廣泛用於高科技產品,包括強性磁鐵,電池,LED照明燈,電動汽車,風力渦輪機和導彈等。中國一直是全球稀土生產和出口大國。但是目前北京政府基於環保理由限量開采稀土,並減少出口。日本,歐盟和美國紛紛指責中國為保護本國工業需求限制出口的做法不公平。
